It has always been a joy to teach and guide new snorkelers and divers. I was 28 years old when I went snorkeling for the first time. It was in the Turks and Caicos during what also happened to be my first visit to the Caribbean. With a mask on my face and fins on my feet, I was a little nervous as I stepped in to the water, gripping Whitey’s hand on my right side and our friend Marianne’s hand on the other. Under their instructions I slowly tipped my head in the water not knowing what I would see. Wow! Amazing! Parrotfish! Sergeant Majors! The colors of the coral! My first snorkel experience was phenomenal and any fear of the underwater world quickly dissipated.
Not much later Whitey and I were working on charters boats as Captain and Chef and as Dive Instructor and Dive Master, teaching
and guiding experienced snorkelers and divers but also ‘newbies’. Seeing their eyes light up as they see the fish and the coral. It is so fun to hear their ‘snorkel talk’ as they identify the fish.
